Gulf states adopt common PR strategy 'to rectify image'

The six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are to put in place a common media strategy to improve their image around the world, it emerged on Wednesday.

Media officials from the GCC states met in the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday to discuss how to manage their communication strategies targeting the international community more effectively.

“The participants discussed several issues related to the progress of their work, including a common strategy to rectify the distorted image some Western media have about the countries in the region,” said Ahmad Al Buainain, head of the foreign media department at Qatar News Agency.

He added it would be a continuation of the work the foreign media officials of the GCC states had previously conducted.

Faisal al-Mutalaqqem, information assistant undersecretary for external media in Kuwait, said that the new common strategy was aimed at highlighting the “true image” of the GCC countries, the state-owned Kuwait News Agency reported.

“The GCC has a significant political and economic weight and it has a special standing internationally, and therefore it needs to have a foreign media presence that matches its stature,” said Ahmed Mussa Al Dhabyan, head of media cooperation at the GCC Secretariat General.
