Sales down 70% in Turkey’s Markets due to virus

Due to Coronavirus, Turkey suspended collective mosque prayers until further notice to limit the spread of the virus, while ordering the closure of public spaces including cinemas.

The interior ministry said theaters, cinemas, concert halls, restaurants where there is live music, shisha cafes and places serving tea and coffee, night clubs and bars would be closed.

The head of Turkey’s United Brands Association said on Thursday that sales of stores on high streets and shopping malls had dropped 70% in the past week.

Sinan Oncel, whose association represents 384 brands and 70,000 domestic stores, told Reuters companies cannot make up for the lost sales and that the online sales infrastructure was insufficient.

Companies were prioritizing paying employees, he said.
