Yemen: Government calls for joint Arab force to monitor withdrawal of Houthis

The UN envoy to Yemen is working with the government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and the governments of the Gulf states to build up a formation of a “Gulf Arab forces” that would maintain security and stability in the cities, where Houthis would pull out, and that those forces would be overseeing the delivery of weapons of insurgents in accordance with resolution 2216.

According to the Middle East, the proposed idea of “Gulf Arab forces” for an indefinite period include, until the Yemeni government to rebuild the security forces regain control of the Yemeni cities sea and air ports, and complete the training and preparation and arming of the national army to take over the tasks of maintaining security after the transition.

The sources also confirmed the presence of international pressure on the rebels to release the detainees, most notably the Minister of Defense, as a goodwill gesture before the resumption of peace talks and reach a political solution.

The source was also told that the Yemeni government would name four or five names to participate in the joint technical committee in charge of preparing for the consultations are likely to take place in Geneva.

The sources said that the Yemeni government is keen to describe the upcoming talks, consultations, as it refuses to turn it into an opportunity to announce a truce “during which the rebels can rearrange their forces and without wasting time implementation of the UN resolution.”
