Saudi Foreign Ministry’s Undersecretary for Multilateral Relations Prince Turki Bin Mohammad Bin Saud said Friday Houthi rebels were still blocking delivery of humanitarian supplies to the Yemeni people.
Prince Turki was speaking to reporters after a meeting with representatives of international organizations and coalition countries taking part in relief operations in Yemen, held at the Saudi mission in the UN.
“The problem is that the Houthis continue to block delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people,” he said.
Prince Turki said the meeting touched upon means of boosting cooperation with the international organizations to step up the delivery of relief supplies to those affected by military actions launched by the Houthis and former President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s loyalists.
The Houthis, he added, used force to topple a legitimate government, and placed obstacles in the path of the political process and national dialogue.
He said coalition countries and the UN have agreed to inspect humanitarian-laden ships to make sure they did not contain military-related equipment that might help the Houthis and their allies assault the Yemeni people.
Prince Turki, meanwhile, called for a political solution that guarantees restoration of the legitimate government, resume the political process and national dialogue in line with UN Security Council resolution 2216.
The meeting was attended by UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN refugee agency (UNHCR), the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), World Food Program (WFP), the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as representatives from the US, Britain, the European Union (EU) and other organizations.
Saudi Arabia has been leading an Arab coalition in the fight against Houthis and their allies with the objective of restoring the legitimate government, and achieve peace and security in the country.
