Al Yasmin students sparkle in science event

Scientific advancement should aim to affirm and to improve human life. Keeping in view these words and the theme for this year’s 25th Annual Cluster Meet 2015-16, the International Indian School, Jeddah, conducted the Inter School Science Project Competition at its sprawling campus on Sunday.

Forty six participants from 12 schools took part in the event. The main theme for this year’s science project was ‘Science and Mathematics for Sustainable Development’. The objectives for organizing Science Project Competition were to promote interest in science and technology amongst the younger generation, encourage scientific and technological creativity among students and to inculcate a sense of pride in their talent.

It also aimed at providing exploratory experiences and encouraging research-oriented thinking among science students through self designed models. The endeavor also brought together people with common interest and scientific temperament under the same roof. Nothing has such power to broaden the mind, as the ability to investigate systematically and truly all that comes under observation in life.

The innovative ideas used by the students aimed at developing appropriate technologies especially for rural areas, and integrating scientific ideas with daily life situations. The budding scientists put up an array of exhibits displaying various measures that can be undertaken for effective sustainable development.

Eminent panel of jury adjudicated the entire event. They keenly interacted with the students who exuded confidence while explaining the various projects that were on display. The entire school was abuzz with activity. One could feel the pulse and magnitude of the event through the enthusiasm of both the participants as well as the spectators.

Nothing is theoretically impossible until it is done. There were a number of working models on display. The students from Al Yasmin International School, Riyadh, won the first position. Master Shoaib Iqbal and Master Abdullah Anis Iqbal demonstrated a unique way of communicating through eyes. Their model showed how artists and writers with certain physical disabilities can access computers with the movement of their eyes alone.

The second position was bagged also by Al Yasmin International School, Riyadh. The team demonstrated the working of prosthetic hands with a reduced cost and how to bring this advancement to the reach of common man and make it more functional and accessible.

The third position was awarded to International Indian School, Riyadh. The model depicted the application of Neuro-science and Engineering and its awareness. The winners were awarded trophies and certificates.

One of the members of the jury stated in his address, “Science and technology are key drivers to the development of a nation. The schools should invest in quality education and continuous skills for training of youth”.

The event was a huge success. Exuberance and effervescence defined the day for the students. It must be remembered that the science of today is the technology of tomorrow. It may set limits to knowledge but may never set limits to one’s imagination.
